Meet The Designer

Before establishing her own firm, Valerie Grant spent over fifteen years in the fashion industry working as a Senior Merchandiser at such renowned brands as Prada, Ralph Lauren, Coach and J Crew. Having honed her skills in fashion while catering to a broad range of customers, Valerie brings this valuable experience to every home design project, customizing and tailoring selections to the aesthetic and budget of each individual client.

Valerie’s transition from fashion to interior design began nearly a decade ago, when her family built a home in East Hampton, NY. Her love for interior design became evident as she immersed herself in all aspects of the project including designing cabinetry and selecting furniture, lighting, tile, plumbing fixtures, window treatments and more. It wasn’t long before visitors were asking Valerie to consult and help with their own design projects. After studying Interior Design at Parsons, she founded Valerie Grant Interiors in 2005, combining her expertise in the fashion industry with her innate talent and passion for home design.

About The Project

Med Tile asked designer Valerie Grant to discuss her design philosophy for the home featured in this spotlight:

My client’s vision for their newly renovated 5-bedroom home in Summit NJ, designed by John James Architect AIA, was that it be sophisticated and comfortable. With 3 teenage boys, the top priority was to create a home that suited the needs and lifestyle of this active family.  In designing each space, my intention was to ensure these areas would appeal to the sophisticated taste of my client and also be durable and easy to maintain.

One of my favorite rooms in the house (which is saying a lot!) is the laundry room. Under the theory that laundry is not a particularly fun activity, I wanted to make the space as desirable as possible. With 2 washers and 2 dryers, plenty of room for ironing, folding and line drying – it is a bright, inviting space located on the second floor. All combined to make doing laundry a more enjoyable task.

The homeowners also wanted their own “sanctuary” – a place where they can close the door and escape the hubbub of the home. The master bathroom with its extra deep soaking tub and over-sized shower has a rejuvenating spa like feel. It is a place where they can easily relax and unwind.

Working with Maria Cappello from Mediterranean Tile, we selected unique tile and layouts for the 8 bathrooms, mudroom and laundry room. Each area was designed to tie into the overall aesthetic of the home with natural materials and a neutral color palette – creating a timeless classic design.

Following is a list of materials sourced from Mediterranean Tile that were used in each of the respective spaces:

  • Master Bathroom – Floor & Shower: Ocean Blue Travertine.
  • Boy’s Bath – Floors: Mosaic water jet pattern. Walls: Spanish grey polished marble. Top of shower Mosaic: Aspen white with Spanish grey blend.
  • Guest Bathroom – Floor: Glass mosaic penny rounds. Walls: Glass tile with glass mosaic accent band.
  • Formal Powder Room – Floor: Marble water jet in horizon marble in a parquet pattern.
  • Basement Bathroom – Walls & Floor: Midnight bluestone. Shower Floor: Grey marble pebbles.
  • Laundry Room – Floor: Porcelain   Backsplash: Glass subway tile.
  • Mud Room – Floor: Honed basalt limestone.
